Dawn of War 2

Genre: RTS Platform: PC ESRB:M Players:1(4 online)

Dawn of War 2-1The year is 2005 and I installed 512mb into my old Gateway PC (Hey! 512mb was a lot at the time). Feeling proud of this “achievement”, I decided to test my updated “rig” playing a great game at the time. What was the game I chose? It was Dawn of War, a real time strategy game adaptation of the classic strategy game. From the first time I clicked on my unit and told them to move to the resource point, I fell instantly in love with the game. I spent one time playing a multiplayer match for five hours! Sadly, my “rig” broke down, and I could never play the game again. Fast forward to 2009, and I found out that Dawn of War 2 will be coming out in March. Let me tell you how excited I am for this game.

So what will be the story in Dawn of War 2’s single player? Although I do not know the specifics about the single player story, tidbits about it have already been released. Like the first game, the story involves the Space Marines, who will face a new threat called the Tyranid.

Although I’m still disappointed by the absence of other factions in the single player, I see that Relic Entertainment has added some new features to the game. One new feature is the inclusion of moral choices in missions. For example, there may be multiple distress calls to answer for a limited duration during a mission. You will have to choose between saving civilians or obtaining War Gear. Another feature in this game is the heightened realism. Jetpack units take off and land more realistically, AI will actually seek cover, buildings and vehicles will be scaled realistically, and no-base building during the single player campaign. Dawn of War 2 will also feature some RPG elements in its gameplay. Commanders and units will all level up and receive new skills. But you know why I am exicited about the game? Two words: modest specifactions. From looking at the spec sheet for Dawn of War 2, any of today’s machines can power this gorgeous looking game without a single hiccup. Finally, the game will feature co-op and skirmish multiplayer modes that made the series famous.

Although I’m excited to see a Dawn of War sequel, I’m worried about the game’s departure from its traditional RTS elements. However, knowing that the game is in the hands of Relic Entertainment (the company responsible for the first Dawn of War game and Company of Heroes), Dawn of War 2 is in good hands. The carnage begins March of this year.
